Time To Think About The Garden
Ok fellow apartment dwellers, small space dwellers and even big yard homeowners. It is time to start thinking about planting a garden this spring. Yea I know it is cold enough to freeze a….. but now is the time to start planning for your vegetable garden. This year we are even going to show our progress on two fronts.
Garden One this spring will be the garden we create on the back patio. Our patio, as you will see in January, is not very big at all. We are going to grow enough veggies out there to give away to neighbors. We did not get the opportunity to develop a garden out there last year, but this year we are going to show you just how much you can grow in a small space.
Garden Two is going to be our year round indoor vegetable garden, in the apartment. I am just not that impressed with grocery store vegetables or fruits, even the organic variety. The produce is waxed or look looks terrible. This goes for IN season and out of season produce. Maybe I’m getting old, but I am just fed up with tomatoes that taste like wet paper towels. So we have decided that we will be starting an indoor garden as well. No hydroponics for us, I am not that talented. We will be using regular soil and regular containers with regular growing measures. Just the way I like it….simple and regular.
The news out there regarding our food supply is downright scary. Now I know some of the reports are hype, but we also have enough knowledge to know that we need to take precautions where and when we can. It was one thing when you heard of all the meat recalls last year, but when the FDA starts recalling raw vegetables…there is a problem. So we knew that for us growing our own was not going to be an option…it is a must.
Growing your own vegetables is a small step in the direction of not only living greener but taking small measures of self sufficiency. Gardening can be done no matter where you live. Sure you may be like us and not have the space to grow everything you want, but you have space to grow something. So over the next few weeks I challenge you to decide on a few vegetables you would like to grow in your space this year. What type of veggies do you like? What do you cook with? This is the variety you want to grow. Starting in January we will begin going over the planning stages as well as starting a compost to add to your garden and your houseplants.
