Call the landlord or go by the office and ask them to have your furnace serviced and cleaned. Having a technician come out to clean and lubricate the furnace could catch small issues now before they become big issue later. Make sure that the technician cleans out the blower compartment and installs a new filter.

Lower The Temperature

Studies have shown that for every degree you turn the thermostat down you can 2% – 3% on your heating bill. If you do not have a programmable thermostat, ask about having one installed. Programmable thermostats are a great way to preset temperature ranges based on your lifestyle.

Reverse The Ceiling Fan

Most ceiling fans have a reverse switch that mounts to the side of the housing. By reversing the ceiling fan and setting the fan on low you will recirculate the warm air throughout the room. Unfortunately we do not have ceiling fans in this apartment, however that will be up for discussion in March when our lease is up for renewal.

Lower The Water Heater Thermostat

Most water heaters are set at 140-degrees, however they do not need to be set above 120-degrees. The water heater has two access panels on the side. Turn the circuit breaker off to the water heater before removing the access panels. The thermostats are lowered by turning the dial with a flathead screwdriver. Remember to turn the circuit breaker back on after closing the access panels. You can check out some other helpful ideas to reduce water heater costs at Cut Costs Heating Water.

Seal The Air Around Doors and Windows

One of the common areas you will lose a lot of money, especially in an apartment, is gaps around windows and doors. I have found that rental offices are not too eager to come out and place weather strip around your windows and doors. Solution? Spend the few extra dollars and do it yourself. It may cost a little out of pocket right now, but you will recoup the savings the following month. I have some articles about effective ways for weatherstripping doors and weatherstripping windows.

Those are just five inexpensive, quick ways to start saving money on your home heating costs. Look around your place and start looking at ways you can cut your energy costs and save money.
